Description: This Excellent Late 1940s True Vintage Portis Stratoliner (Bound Brim Edge) Beaver Fifteen 15 - Gray Fedora, size 7-3/8. OUTSTANDING! That Beautiful Stratoliner Type Bound Brim Edge really makes this stand out! The Leather sweatband states “BEAVER LUX”. The LUX we believes stands for “LUXURY FINISH”. This definitely feels like it does have some type of special finish to it. So if you’re familiar with the Resistol “KITTEN FINISH” that’s similar to what this feels like but MUCH MUCH SOFTER and THICKER! Also on the front of the leather sweatband its states, “ IMPORTED FUR” with a picture of a Beaver and Rabbit below it. As we are felling this material it feels much more like all the Beaver Hats in Dads collection. We even put it up against a Borsalino “Beaver-Hare” mix and it’s nothing like it. The Borsalino Beaver-Hare Mix you can see the longer Hare fibers on the felt. So if there is any Hare it’s NOT the long fiber type you see on Borsalino hats! There maybe a bit of Hare mixed in this and maybe that is what’s making that softer finish? We just aren’t feeling the HARE like the Borsalino hats have. If anyone has better information please write to us. If this was worn more than a handful of times we’d be very surprised! You can see the hat appears New. Just like it was bought at the store. There is NO wear on the leather sweatband and if you look at the reed ( the actual part that attaches to the hat and gets all the wear when it’s been worn and placed on a surface) it’s pristine.This came out of my Son’s collection. Dating was easy.If you look closely at the Liner Design inside the fedora you can see it’s a very late 1940s to early 1950s design. Look at that Beautiful Unique Grosgrain Ribbon! Rarely do you see this style of Bow! It’s the type of Bow that only found on these dates fedoras! It’s called a “Half Bow”. It’s a REAL LOOKER! Also the liner cover is than very very thin plastic cover (completely intact and NOT Dried out Or Broken) that was used between 1949-1952, then the heavier plastic liner cover started to be used after that. This is NOT and “Onion-Skin” but the liner cover used just after that.After my grandson did a final close inspection he can see just a bit of something on the liner? So it does cost a couple dollars more than most of our shipping charges. The brim can be easily turned up or down, as you may like it? We can steam that shape into the hat if you’d like, just write and ask. But it easily will flip up and stay in that position with steaming it. This style fedora can be seen in all those 1940s and 1950s Crime Gangster Movies! Favorites of James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart and so many others.So as my Grandson wanted to add to a newer movie: The Blues Brothers and the fedora hat that John Belushi wore in that movie. The color is a light Gray, some folks call it DOVE GRAY and The picture of the whole underside reflects the actual color. This is a Beaver FIFTEEN. We took out Dad’s personal collection of 1950s Stetson Beaver Hats: 3X, Ten, Fifteen, Twenty and TwentyFive. This matches up with the Beaver Fifteen Perfectly. The beaver is very very soft and thick.Actually the best way to determine the Beaver Quality is while steam shaping any hat. The BUTTERY softness while steaming the hat and how soft and easily shaping is really does tell how Great a Beaver quality a hat material is. While steaming this fedora it was so easy to feel the Buttery softness the Beaver feels! Once shaped this will remain in this shape until someone steams it again. Dad and Grandson steamed shaped a bit of a tune up, currently has been shaped into a pinched crown fedora because that Beaver Fifteen is so easy to work with! This is a VINTAGE Beaver Fifteen and It’s nothing like what you would compare to any newer hat! It’s just very soft and thick beaver, soft and thick and so easy to shape! We NEVER hide anything on the great hats we list for dad. Though dad and I are both very old we always have my grandson do the final inspections with his young healthy eyes. NOTE: this was found along with a second fedora inside of an oval 1940 Think heavy Knox hat box but Dad had that Original 1950 square Portis hat box to replace it with. It’s still in great condition with its hat holding insert set. That hat box is large and does cost a few more dollars to ship.If you do NOT want the hat box shipping is only $19.20 but you MUST write to us and let us know. So many folks just don’t want to spend the extra money for shipping and will wear the hat to often so a hat box will not be needed. We will refund back the difference after the purchase. So we always measure each hat 3 times, using different methods to verify the actual size. We use the Tilley hat size chart. This chart is still in use today.
