Description: The Da Vinci Flying Machine, by The Noble Collection (Model # NS9131) History's greatest artist and inventor, Leonardo Da Vinci was a genius centuries ahead of his time. He designed a multitude of mechanical devices, including parachutes, and he studied the flight of birds, as well as their structure. About 1485 he drew detailed plans for a human-powered ornithopter (a wing-flapping device intended to fly). There is no evidence that he actually attempted to build such a device, although the image he presented was a powerful one. The notion of a human-powered mechanical flight device, patterned after birds or bats*, recurred again and again over the next four centuries and with his Flying Machine he influenced the entire course of aviation. (*It should also be noted that the bat-like design of Da Vincis Flying Machine was claimed by comic book artist Bob Kane to be a source of inspiration for the creation of Batman and the design of his cape and glider). This collectible replica is based on Da Vincis famous designs found in his notebooks and is authentically recreated in polished brass with acid-etched details. A working model with wings that actually move, The Flying Machines wingspan is 10.5" from tip to tip. It mounts on a polished brass and hardwood base with a stand. The height is approximately 6" high when mounted, but it can be removed and displayed separately as an option. The base has a cherry wood finish with a red felt bottom that measures 7.25" in diameter and is topped with a polished brass acid-etched plate featuring DaVinci's famous Vitruvian Man drawing. Dimensions: Wing span: 10.75 in Base diameter: 7.25 in
