It was the powered version of the earlier Me-321 glider. The aircraft had a length of 92 feet 11 inches, a wingspan of 180 feet 5 inches, and a height of 33 feet 10 inches. With six Gnome-Rhône 14N radial engines, each generating 1,160 horsepower, it achieved a top speed of 173 mph, a range of 800 miles, and a service ceiling of 13,000 feet. The Me-323 had a crew of five and was capable of carrying up to 130 troops or 24 tons of cargo. Its defensive armament included up to 13 13mm MG 131 machine guns for protection. The "box-like fuselage" and unique upturned wingtips were distinctive features. It was primarily used by the Luftwaffe for large-scale transport operations, particularly in the Mediterranean and Eastern Front theaters. The Messerschmitt Me-323 was notably employed in the North African campaign to transport troops and supplies. It was also used in attempts to resupply German forces in Tunisia and during the operations on the Eastern Front. However, its large size and slow speed made it vulnerable to enemy fighters.Aircraft identification posters during WWII were vital for helping military personnel distinguish between allied and enemy aircraft. Produced by organizations like the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and the U.S. Army Air Forces, these posters highlighted aircraft silhouettes, features, and specifications to improve identification skills and reduce friendly fire incidents.TEXTARMYMESSERSCHMITT"ME-323"TRANSPORTREICHBox-like fuselageWing tips upturnedSix enginesHigh fin and rudderUnusual landing gearFrom data currently availableRESTRICTEDSCALE 6-FOOT MANU.S. NAVY, BUREAU OF AERONAUTICS, FEB. 1944
